The museum is named for its founder, John L. Slater, who bequeathed his estate to the City of Norwich with the stipulation that it be used for the "erection and maintenance of a free public library and museum."


The museum's collections include American paintings and sculpture, 19th- and 20th-century European art, pre-Columbian art, African art, and a variety of other artifacts from around the world. The museum also has a planetarium and a hands-on Discovery Center for children. Leffingwell House Museum, is another historic attraction, which was used as a tavern prior to the Revolutionary War. Today, its layout and objects on display reflect America in the 1700's for residents to see.

5. Dining

Norwich has a unique selection of different cultures and a variety of restaurant types. Illiano's Grill has been serving Norwich residents' delightful Italian cuisine since 1997. The menu features all of the classic Italian dishes that you know and love, as well as some of their own specialties. Canggio Restaurant is a special stop to try something uncommon, like Peruvian.
