1. Rich History

The Whaling City has history tied to the Revolutionary War. In fact, Benedict Arnold led his army through New London in 1781 and burnt down a majority of it! Taking a stroll through downtown shows 18th century buildings and landmarks. Take a visit to the New London County Historical Society or Monte Cristo Cottage to see some wonderful historic value. Bank Street has the Whaling Bank (1833), Jonathan Starr House (1790), and Benjamin Brown House (1833) alone! Overall, New London is well-known for preserving historic roots and proceeds with ongoing traditions.

2. Parks & Recreation

With rich scenic routes and a fascinating landscape, New London keeps you active. Enjoy the bicycle trails on land or consider taking a water taxi to immerse yourself in some stunning views. Ocean Beach Park is available for those who prioritize relaxation with plenty of beach space to lounge in the sand. There’s also mini golf and a water park for activities. Bates Wood Park has picnic pavilions, green space for sports, and walking trails through nature. Fort Trumbull State Park provides views of the Thames River and has something for everyone with fishing piers and its own boardwalk.

3. Bars & Restaurants

Downtown New London is the place to go for entertainment all day and night long. Take Hot Rod Cafe for example, which has an abundance of wing flavors, a variety of craft beer, and live music. Dockside Resort has great food and drink prices and a large outdoor deck area where you can hang out by the water. The Green Room is your place for craft cocktails, comfort/soul food, and a great music vibe. The condensed feel of New London packs a punch with plenty of bars and restaurants within a mile or two.

4. Education

New London creates excellent pathways for education and career choices afterwards. Mitchell College is a popular Liberal Arts school that provides students with many kinds of support. Students are surrounded by sports, welcoming staff, and it’s located on a beautiful waterfront campus. Connecticut College is also a Liberal Arts institution and was established in 1911. In 2016 it was one of the top 100 best colleges in the nation. New London also has Porter & Chester for students who want to pursue an essential career with programs such as healthcare, cosmetology, and trade.

5. Maritime Heritage

If you can’t get enough of the water, New London is the right fit for you. The CT Maritime Festival happens every fall where you can find everything from ship and vessel tours to cruises. There are also food trucks and vendors everywhere. The Custom House Maritime Museum is not only a historic building itself, but it also has a collection of maritime history, classes, and a gift shop. If you want something more adventurous, you can schedule a lighthouse tour!  And don’t forget a visit to Lyman Allyn Art Museum whose “American Perspectives” collection features several works celebrating New London’s maritime and whaling history.
