How to Pack Dishes for Moving

May 16, 2024

Moving can be a stressful process, especially when it comes to packing delicate items like dishes. Properly packing your dishes is crucial to ensure they arrive at your new home in one piece. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you pack your dishes safely and efficiently.

1. Gather Your Supplies

Before you start packing, make sure you have all the necessary supplies:

  • Sturdy boxes: Use small to medium-sized boxes to avoid making them too heavy.
  • Packing paper: Newspaper can work, but packing paper is cleaner.
  • Bubble wrap: For extra protection.
  • Packing tape: To secure the boxes.
  • Markers: To label the boxes.

2. Prepare the Boxes

Start by reinforcing the bottom of each box with packing tape. Then, create a cushion at the bottom of the box by placing a layer of crumpled packing paper or bubble wrap. This will help absorb any shocks during the move.

3. Wrap Each Dish Individually

Take each dish and wrap it individually in packing paper. For extra protection, you can add a layer of bubble wrap. Place the dish in the center of the packing paper, fold one corner over the dish, and continue folding and tucking the paper until the dish is completely covered.

4. Pack Plates Vertically

Place the wrapped plates vertically in the box, like you would load a dishwasher. This method reduces the risk of breakage compared to stacking them flat. Continue adding plates until the box is full, making sure to fill any gaps with crumpled packing paper to prevent shifting.

5. Pack Bowls and Glasses

Wrap bowls and glasses individually with packing paper. For glasses, stuff the inside with crumpled paper before wrapping to provide extra cushioning. Place these items in the box, filling gaps with packing paper or bubble wrap. You can pack bowls and glasses in the same box as plates, but be sure to add a layer of crumpled paper between them.

6. Fill Empty Spaces

Once the box is full, fill any remaining empty spaces with crumpled packing paper or bubble wrap. This prevents the dishes from shifting during the move, which can cause breakage.

7. Cushion the Top

Before sealing the box, add a final layer of crumpled packing paper or bubble wrap on top. This provides additional cushioning and ensures the items are snug and secure.

8. Seal and Label the Boxes

Securely tape the top of the box closed with packing tape. Use a marker to label the box "FRAGILE" and indicate which room it should go in at your new home. This will help movers handle it with care and place it in the correct location.

9. Consider Using Dish Pack Boxes

For added protection, consider using dish pack boxes, which are specifically designed for packing dishes. These boxes are thicker and often come with cell dividers to separate and protect each item.

10. Load Carefully

When loading the boxes onto the moving truck, make sure they are placed on top of heavier items and not under anything that could crush them. Secure the boxes in the truck to prevent them from shifting during transit.
