10 Steps for Properly Packing Your Boxes

Moving can be a stressful experience, but packing your boxes correctly can make a significant difference in how effortless your move feels. Properly packed boxes not only protect your belongings but also ensure that the moving process goes smoothly. Here are some essential steps to follow to pack your boxes like a pro:

1. Tape the Bottom of the Box

The first step is to reinforce the bottom of your boxes. This is crucial to support the weight of the packed goods. Use strong packing tape and apply it generously to the bottom seams of the box. A few extra strips of tape can prevent the bottom from giving out during the move.

2. Create a Cushioned Bottom Layer

Next, layer the bottom of the box with packing paper. This creates a cushioned base that helps protect your items from any impact or pressure during the move. Crumple the packing paper and spread it evenly across the bottom.

3. Pack Heavier Items First

When packing, start with the heavier items. Place them at the bottom of the box to create a stable foundation. This not only helps balance the box but also prevents lighter, more fragile items from getting crushed.

4. Use Plenty of Packing Paper

Packing paper is your best friend when it comes to moving. Use it liberally to wrap your items and fill in any gaps. This will help prevent items from shifting and breaking during transport.

5. Add Packing Peanuts or Foam

For extra protection, use packing peanuts or foam. These materials are great for cushioning and can fill in spaces that packing paper might miss. They help absorb shock and keep your items secure.

6. Layer Your Items

Once you've packed a layer of items, add another layer of crumpled packing paper on top. This creates a buffer between the layers and adds extra protection. Repeat this process until the box is full.

7. Avoid Empty Spaces

Ensure there are no empty spaces inside the box. Items shifting around can lead to damage. If you notice any gaps, fill them with packing paper, peanuts, or foam. A tightly packed box is a safer box.

8. Pack the Box to the Top

Fill the box all the way to the top to prevent it from collapsing or items from shifting. If there's space at the top, fill it with packing paper or other cushioning materials.

9. Secure the Top of the Box

Once your box is packed to the top, fold the flaps in and secure them with about three pieces of tape. This ensures that the top will stay closed and your items will remain protected.

10. Label the Box

Finally, label the top and at least one side of the box with a Sharpie or magic marker. Include a brief description of the contents and the room where the box should go in your new home. Clear labeling makes unpacking much easier and more organized.
