What Size Is Your Move? From In-House to Long-Distance Moving

CT Moving and Storage • Feb 11, 2022

Moves are not "one size fits all" and your moving experience will depend on a number of variables that make it unique. Those variables include the size and location of your move and whether you're planning on doing all the packing yourself or calling on the professionals for a partial or full packing service. It also depends on whether you're doing the loading and unloading yourself.

Let's take a look at the different moving options that are available.

What Size Is Your Move?

Move sizes can include everything from moving furniture into an in-home office, moving into a college dorm or studio apartment, or out of a four-bedroom house. Are you moving down the hall, across town, or out of state? Moving costs will depend on the size and distance of your move and how much professional moving help you may need.

How Much Will Your Move Cost?

No matter the size of your move, you'll have to decide whether you can handle it yourself (with the help of friends and pizza, of course!) or if you'll need professional help. If you decide on the pros, how much help do you need?

These are some of the professional moving options that are available. The more you choose, the more the cost.

  • Packing Materials. A moving company has just the right boxes and packaging for anything you need to move. Packing on your own will save on the final bill.
  • Partial or Full Packing. Take advantage of the expertise of professional movers when it comes to packing hard-to-handle items or everything!
  • Loading and/or Unloading. If you choose to rent a moving storage unit to get your belongings from your old place to your new place, you can rely on professionals to load everything safely before transporting. Unloading is another option once the unit arrives to your new destination, too!
  • A Full-Service Move. This is exactly what it sounds like....the moving company does everything - packing, loading, moving, unloading, unpacking, etc.

Save Money on Your Move

You can save money on your move by cutting down on some of the help you may need.

  • Declutter Ahead of Time.  You might even make some money off those unwanted items!
  • Save on Space and Packing Materials. Tuck clothing, towels, and blankets around fragile items to cushion and protect them.
  • Don't Leave Things Empty. Never pack empty suitcases, totes, bags, etc. Filling them up first cuts down on the overall size of your move. Even large pots and slow cookers can be lined with dish towels and packed full of utensils or flatware.
