Moving in Together? Follow These Tips for Combining Your Stuff

Jun 22, 2021

Moving can be an equally exciting and stressful time, and when you're moving in with someone, whether it's a spouse, significant other, or a roommate — double the stuff can easily snowball into double the stress. But it doesn't have to! Here are a few tips for combining your stuff as you prepare to move in together.

Plan Ahead to Reduce the Stress of Moving

Taking time to plan for your move can make the whole process easier, so you and your new housemate can focus on making this a fun and memorable experience as you start a new chapter of your lives. Start planning as early as possible to give you both plenty of time to sort through your things, declutter what you don't need, and pack your belongings to get ready for the move.

Take Inventory of What You Both Have

There are some things that you just won't need duplicates of when you move in together.

Some of these might include:

  • Large furniture, like beds, dressers, couches, or dining sets
  • Large appliances, like refrigerators, ranges, washers and dryers
  • Other kitchen appliances, like microwaves, coffee makers, and toasters
  • Cookware, dishware, and silverware sets
  • Rugs, wall hangings, and other home decor

Have each of you make a list of what you own. You can organize your lists by room, like kitchen, bedroom, living room, laundry, utility, garage, etc. to make it easier to compare your inventory and see what both of you already have for each room of your new home.

Decide What Stays and What Goes

Together, you can go through your lists and compare them to decide what each of you wants to keep, versus what needs to go. In some cases, you might be able to repurpose some of your extra items to furnish additional rooms in your new home, like a guest bedroom or a den. For everything else, you'll need to decide what to do with all that extra stuff.

Here are some ideas to declutter:

  • Give things away to friends or family
  • Donate items to a thrift store or charity
  • Find a local recycling program that accepts old appliances or furniture
  • List your items for sale online or have a garage sale

Getting rid of what you don't need ahead of time will make moving day easier, because you'll have less stuff to pack up and fit into the moving truck.  If either of you have belongings that you don't want to part with, but won't fit into your new home, you might consider renting a storage unit to keep those items safe and secure.
