How Much Will My Move Cost?

Oct 09, 2021

Moving involves a lot of planning and organizing beforehand. If not done carefully, the various costs and expenses can really add up. While there are many factors to consider which will determine the overall cost of your move, there are some tips you can follow to get the most out of your moving budget and even save a little money along the way.

4 Factors That Determine the Cost of Your Move

Everyone is going to have a slightly different experience with moving, since everyone has different lifestyles and moving plans to take into consideration. Here are a few things to take into account when calculating the cost of your move:

  • Distance of the Move. Are you moving across town or out of state? And how are you getting there? If you're completing the move yourself, you'll need to consider the cost of your truck rental, how much gas you'll need to get to your new home, plus food and hotel stays if you have a long trip ahead of you. If you hire professional movers, you'll need to consider the cost of the moving service, plus any additional cost for gas or extra mileage that you will be responsible for.
  • How Much You Have to Pack. Are you moving a one-bedroom apartment or a four-bedroom house? Consider how much furniture you will need to move, and about how many boxes there will be once all of your items are packed. The amount of stuff you have will make a big difference in how much space you need in the moving truck.
  • Packing Materials and/or Services. Are you packing everything yourself? Do you have packing materials already on hand, or do you need to purchase them? Or are you opting to hire a packing service?
  • Number of Movers. When hiring a moving service, it's important to keep in mind how many movers will be needed to safely lift and move heavy items, and to efficiently move all of your belongings in a timely manner.

Tips to Save Money on Your Move

It's possible to save some money during your move. Here are a few clever tips to reduce the cost of moving:

  • Declutter Before You Move — Before moving day, you can make a little extra money that can go towards your moving expenses. Inventory what you have and decide what you no longer need. That way, you have less stuff to move, and you can even sell unwanted items online, in buy/sell/trade or pawn shops, or in a garage sale.
  • Use What You Have to Pack — Use soft items like blankets or towels to cushion dishes or other fragile items in your moving boxes. You can also pack things inside of empty suitcases, bags, or bins that you'll be taking with you.
  • Recycle Old Boxes — In the months leading up to your move, save empty boxes from packages to reuse as moving boxes. If you need more boxes, try asking local grocery or retail stores if you can take some of their empty boxes from deliveries off their hands — they will end up being thrown out anyways, and the employees are usually happy to help you out!
  • Recruit Your Friends — Ask friends or family members to help you move. They're usually more than willing to help you, and it can turn a stressful moving day into a more fun experience! It never hurts to offer them pizza for helping out, too.
